Pollution spares none – including the Queen of the hills!

When my  parents first informed me about our trip to Kurseong , I was  excited !I  pictured myself sitting amid nature , hearing the birds chirp and gazing into the cloudy sky.

Kurseong is a hill station in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Located at an altitude of about 1400 meters above sea level , it boasts of greenbelts, tea gardens , waterfalls and wildlife. The region has a strong Buddhist influence , with monasteries all around.

While we were on tour , we came across this sight. I was shocked! It was completely unexpected! Instead of green belts and clear air , I saw fire burning and smelly smoke. Our tour guide told us that it resulted from burning plastic and other waste materials. I was immensely disappointed to hear that. Can’t we humans care about the environment for once? Why do we always have to be so selfish? Eventually , issues such as pollution will bring mankind to its knees.

I strongly believe in this quote ,” your deeds have a way of coming back to you.” We might be ignorant of pollution for now , but it will worsen if we don’t prevent it from deteriorating. What we do today will affect our future generations. We have to realize the worth of nature. The  least we can do is throw waste materials in dustbins instead of littering. It is not too late. Each one of us can make a difference.
